New Etsy Store...

No, I'm not 50 yet. This is just a sample cupcake pick that I made to list in my new Etsy shop. I will be selling personalized cupcake picks. There are a couple of other samples below. You can click here to see them all.

If you've never visited Etsy before, it's a wonderful place to go and get lost for awhile. It is a place for artists, artisans and just plain crafters to sell their handmade goods. You can find the most unique things! I can get lost for hours when I start looking at the items.

So since I am mostly homebound during the winters here I am trying to find things I can sell online to make a little extra money. This is a start. I haven't seen anything like it before, so that's always good (I hope!). Link me to your friends if you'd like to help me get the word out.

I will be adding more as the days go by.

My Mind's Eye - Beautiful new line of paper

Beck's class is so large it was hard to fit much on the page.

Beck and Chloe are in 6th and 5th grade at Timpanogos Intermediate School. Their yearbook is made up of pages created like scrapbooks. After letting the teachers know I was available for any crafty needs, I was lucky enough to get to make their class yearbook pages.

Chloe's class. You may notice that my children's pictures are missing from both pages. That's just because we moved here after school pictures were taken. Not to worry, their pics were added later.

Out of Touch!

So sorry I have been out of touch on my paper blog! Life sort of took over with us moving to Utah. My Cricut is still packed up, but everyday I get a little closer to taking it out and doing something creative. One thing I'm excited about that I got recently, is this book, "Card Making with Cricut" from Annie's Attic. I got it super cheap on Amazon.com. It's full of really cute cards.

(Update: I just went back to Amazon.com and can't find the great deal I got. I think mine was under $1, plus shipping.)

Imagine my surprise (not!) that I have almost every cartridge used in the book and practically all of the paper. But it's so sad that my patterned paper is stowed away in the garage until we make our final move into a house in about 5 months. Don't count me out yet, though, I still plan on getting some of these cards made!

I know, another picture of me, right? Well, I'm not that conceited. Beth asked the Design Team Members to each make a magnet board. We picked the paper, flower, ribbon and embellishments that showed our styles the best.

The beautiful flowers and bling are from Prima. The paper is from Pink Paisley and there is a spotted pink Bazzill cardstock. The initial "R" is a magnetic wooden letter.

What a fun Cricut class we had this afternoon! It was a fun group of ladies and I hope they learned a lot. They all seemed to have a good time.

Cricut Expression Class

This morning when I opened The Scrapbook Junkie I had 4 people signed up for my Cricut Expression class that I am teaching on Sunday afternoon from 4-6p.m. By the end of the day, I had 12 people signed up! Way to read the emails, people!! I am so excited!

Know what it's called when a group of Cricut owners get together with their machines? A "Swarm". I've taught these classes several times before and it is so fun when everyone is cutting from their Cricut at the same time.

Father's Day Wallets

I made these paper wallets (50 of them!) for a company to give to its employees who are fathers. It was sort of a ""card" to include the message that they received a 1/2 day vacation for all that they do as fathers.

I got the idea from Nicole Heady's blog. I added my own twists like the texture and the closure.

The wallet was pretty plain without any texture on the outside, so I created each side separately and ran each end through my Cuttlebug using the leather texture embossing folder.

Then I put the two sides together using red line tape. The closure is a velcro coin with a metal brad on the outside.

Prima has a cool new canvas album. Each of the DT members got a page to embellish... the final book will be on display at The Scrapbook Junkie. Here is my page, front and back. The embellishments and paper are from Creative Imaginations.

On the back of the canvas page I embroidered some swirly designs and added paper flowers from the CI travel line.

I stamped the circles with my glue pad and added brown flocking.

Using a portion of the acetate overlay, I made a pocket and made tags to go inside.

Well, it's my favorite color. And it's also the favorite color of the young lady who will be receiving this tin. It is a commission for her graduation and each member of her family is going to put a little something inside.

It's wedding season again! And here's another project for my sis. I love making these altered tins! This paper is from Creative Imaginations and I love the little birds on it. The bird on the front is an embellishment from Heidi Swapp -- it's a mirror! How cool is that? I mounted it on an acrylic circle and layered pearl flowers around it. Every edge has a detail.

I repeated the bird theme on the inside lid, with a smaller mirror bird and more pearl flowers.

Mother's Day Boxes

My sister hired me to make 25 of these boxes for her employees who are Moms. I made 5 of each patterned paper design. They are 4 1/4" square. The box itself is cut from an Accu-Cut die using Kraft Bazzill paper. It's a neutral color so any of the patterened paper goes with it. The matching ribbon on the edge of the lid helps to keep the lid together, as well as tie in the top and the bottom. The flowers on top were also cut using an Accu-Cut die. I cut two of each size flower and folded the petals in half to add a little dimension. I then used pop dots to raise each layer up above the other.

I'm happy to report that I am ready to begin teaching classes at The Scrapbook Junkie! My first class will be a Cricut Hands-On class. This will be Tuesday, May 5th from 6:30-8:30. Each person brings their own Cricut machine and supplies and we walk through all of the features together. You leave with a sampler of the functions. Cost is $20. Call the store now to sign up!!

Wednesday, May 13th "Spring Things" Basic Grey 2-page layout. Cost: $20.00 Time: 6:30-8:30. Pics are below. We will do some scissor cutting and a little bit of paper sculpting with the butterflies.

Silly, Silly Girls!

Design Team meeting was tonight at The Scrapbook Junkie. Fun news!! I got "promoted". I am now on the official monthly team, not an alternate any longer. One of the ladies was unable to fulfill her duties and I am taking over her crown, er... I mean her duties. Such a treat for me!

Beth wanted to get a pic of all of us wearing the green go-go glitter glasses, that's what I call them, anyway. It was a hoot. These ladies are not only terribly creative designers, but just a whole lot of fun.

Another Wedding Gift...

I covered this frame with this BEAUTIFUL paper from Making Memories. It is flocked. I just love the feel of flocked paper. It is so rich and luscious. And I LOVE the ribbon that I found. The center strip feels suede and the ruffle edges are like grosgrain ribbon.

Don't you love it when you find something in your stash that is just perfect? That's how I felt about these K& Co. fabric covered brads. The color and design match the flocked paper. Aaah, there's just something so satisfying about that!

Wedding Gift

My nephew got married and I made this book for him and his new wife.

I used the Heidi Swapp Mirror book cover. I really enjoyed working with it. It was a bit intimidating at first. I wasn't sure how certain things would look on it, but I think it turned out well.

I fell in love with this line from "Little Yellow Bicycle". Just beautiful and full of textures. I also couldn't resist the embellishments that went along with it. I'm so glad I had a reason to buy it. LOL

Kitty Scrapbook

I made my daughter a scrapbook of all of the cats we have or have had, for her birthday. She had a wonderful reaction. She oohed and aahhed over each page. It reminded me of why I love scrapbooking, especially as gifts for others.

I intend to take pics of the layouts to show. It went pretty quickly since it was 8" x 8". But I did find that I had to print out my own pics in order to get them small enough to put more than 1 or 2 on a page. That was unfortunate since I had already paid to have 100 developed. Oh well, she can have a photo book, too, right. :)

Another Blast from the Past...

Well, since I am bringing up the past, I thought I would share a page I had published a few years ago. The publication was "Scrapbook Answers", April 2006 issue. Above is a scan of the article and below is a pic of the actual page.

I was so sad to see "Scrapbook Answers" go out of business. They included a CD in each issue with lots of info, fonts and clipart.

Oh well, at least I got my 15 minutes!

December Design Team Project - Scrapbook Junkie

What a fun bag of goodies for my December DT Project! Lots of Heidi Swapp Paper, Around The Block adhesive decorative tape, flowers, chipboard embellishments and a WAY COOL Bare Elements book to alter. There is a pull out on each page, either top or side.

After

Cover - since I couldn't access my photos on my computer I decided to find vintage Christmas images online. What fun those are! I incorporated them into the book even though the paper is contemporary, I mixed the vintage with it.

Just a bunch of Junkies!

That's right, it was just a bunch of us Scrapbook Junkies meeting last night. The first Design Team meeting was held. Lucky me, it was my month to participate!

Beth kept us super busy making fun ornaments for the store's Christmas tree. We used circles from Christmas paper and pins, buttons, ribbon and anything else we could stick to the styrofoam ball. It was fun to meet the other ladies and see everyone being so creative and eager to meet each other.

Me!

Why sort of? Well, I came in runner up, but the great thing is, it's not just a title. I get to participate with the official design team about 4 times a year. Plus get the benefits they receive. I was disappointed not to be an "official" design team member, but so glad the Beth still had plans to include me.

Should one of the design team members not be able to fulfill her duties in 2009, I would take up the crown... er... I mean, replace that person on the team.

I will share more about that as time goes on. Our first meeting is tomorrow evening.

Handy Altered Tin Tool

I found a great link for a very handy tool for altering tins! Scroll down to the very bottom of the page when you go to that link, and you will find acrylic templates to fit all different size tins. These are excellent for trimming to size around the hardware and the handles.

They also include their own links as to where to find tins for altering.

Also, I have a tutorial I created a couple of years ago when I was on the Scrapbook Dreamer design team. Let me point one thing out though! I have made many, many of these and over the years have developed what I think is the best method. In this tutorial I use ::gasp:: Mod Podge as the adhesive. Let me tell you, it gave me fits! Use glue stick! It's the cheapest, easiest, and least messy, and actually works the best to prevent air bubbles under the paper. The rest of the tutorial is an accurate representation of how I make them.

Altered Tins

In the previous post I gave some pointers on how to alter tins. I thought it would be fun to show some of my altered tins that I have made over the years. I don't even have one of my own. Seems like I never make anything that I keep. But that's fine by me, it's the creating that I love.

These were either made as gifts or commissioned for gifts.

What I find important to the design of these altered tins is to finish off each edge. Notice the rick rack trim on the tin above. And hide the seams by covering with ribbon. It makes a nice transition as well as adding texture.

I think my "huge flower accent" days may be behind me. LOL It's not only clothing design fashions that come and go. Any other kind of design also has items that go in and out of fashion.

I love the Christmas tin I made for my sister and her family. Inside are 10 "file folders". Each one is decorated and has a photo mat to place the Christmas picture for the current year. This tin will represent 10 years worth of Christmases. And this year is the first one that will include a new baby granddaughter.

I like the idea of making these tins utilitarian as well as beautiful to look at. This tin above has a matching address/calendar book. The book was $2 at Walmart and I recovered it to match.

What do all of these tins have in common? The icing on the cake: RIBBON! I had a friend tell me (a guy!) that these tins look like beautiful wedding cakes. The ribbon is the final touch that pulls all of the colors and textures together. As well as adding height to the project.

Notice how all of the ribbons on a tin do not necessarily match each other, but they do match the tin overall. Mix patterns and textures, widths and shapes. All of those extra little details keep your eyes moving over the piece and your brain engaged with the piece.

Think you can leave out a detail and no one will notice? Guess what, your viewer may not be able to verbalize what is missing, but the eyes are searching to pull the piece together. That's why we feel satisfied and happy when we see something that pleases us visually. It all comes together. That also accounts for why we can look at something and know that "something is missing" and not be able to pinpoint it.

Book Plates

This was a fun little project. We gave my great-niece a book baby shower. I made little bookplates for her to put in each of the books in her library. I got the elephant clipart from Lettering Delights. You can size the clipart to any size and then print it out. I printed the large elephant on heavy white cardstock and did some paper piecing. The book plates were printed on an 8 1/2 x 11" label, then cut apart. The container is a band-aid tin made for altering. I covered it with My Mind's Eye paper.

When covering a tin, use glue stick liberally directly on the tin. Then after cutting the paper to size, press it on and try to get out all of the air bubbles underneath. The great thing about the glue stick is that your paper is still movable for a bit so it's easy to reposition the paper if needed. It also bonds very well and alleviates almost all air bubbles if you cover the project liberally. Any glue stick will work, but I recommend not using the colored sticks that dry clear. I actually had a project ruined because it did not, in fact dry clear, it stained purple. I don't know if it was a reaction to the paper, or the container it was used on. But I learned my lesson!

I don't recommend using Mod Podge. One reason is that it has too much water content and tends to buckle the paper. It is also thin enough that you may get pockets of air from not applying it evenly. The second reason (or is this the third?) is that it gets very messy!

Baby Shower invitation. Cardstock is Stampin' Up! Close to Cocoa and the new Pink. White cardstock was run through my Cuttlebug using the Swiss Dot embossing folder. The elephant stamp is from PaperTrey Ink, "Bitty Baby Blessings". I stamped the elephant on patterned cardstock and cut it out, the ear was stamping on a different paper and cut out and adhered to elephant. Tag is also from a Cuttlebug die.
